A typical day in Hartford

We have been learning about three ways to find meaning in a set of data: the mean, median and mode. Each one has their uses; each one helps us find a pattern in a group of numbers. Mathematics is the science of finding patterns.

As human beings we try to make sense of the world around us by finding patterns and using those patterns to help us navigate in the world; traffic lights change from green to yellow then red.; we use this pattern to stay safe as a driver.

In the fall temperatures begin to drop; this pattern allows us to make decisions about clothing, food etc. Our activity today will further explore using mean, median and mode to find a pattern.

Problem 1.: A typical fall day in Hartford

During the last month the temperature has reached: 70, 55, 82, 77, 84, 65, 48. Find the mean median and mode and based on that information describe a typical October day in Hartford.

Problem 2: Use the internet to find the daily temperatures in Hartford during 7 days in July. Find the mean, median and mode and describe a typical day in Hartford in July.
