The Need for Speed

A person standing on the North Pole is truly standing still. Even though the earth is rotating around its axis, the closer we get to the axis the slower we go. Likewise if a person is standing near the equator they are moving at a speed of just over 1000 miles per hour. The question is how fast are we moving in Hartford Ct? Use Google to find an answer and post it as a comment on this blog.

Oil,Oil Everywhere

The tragic accident on the drilling rig in The Gulf of Mexico resulted in the death of 11 people.

In addition there were many injured. The news reminds us everyday that the oil continues to leak into the gulf at a rate of 210,000 gallons per day.

Below is a series of questions related to the spill. Use the Internet to find the answers and post them to me as a comment.
1. How many barrels per day is 210,000 gallons per day?
2. Find the price of oil and calculate how much money is being lost per day.
3. What other items come into barrels?

The Beauty of Mathematics

There are images we can create in Mathematics called Fractals. They are objects that can be split into parts that are smaller copies of themselves. It is like looking in the mirror at the fun house and seeing your image get smaller and smaller. Today we are going to make a puzzle that will result in a Fractal if put together properly. Click on the link to the right that is called: Puzzle.

Try to rearrange the pieces the complete the image. Post a comment to me of no less than five sentences that describe your Fractal.
